IEX Liquidity Fest

IEX Liquidity Fest

Problem

IEX was preparing to launch D-Limit, a new order type designed to protect traders' displayed orders from faster participants who pick them off just before the price moves. It works for both lit and dark trading. The challenge was to make a market-structure product feel like an event worth showing up for, in late 2020, when a launch couldn't count on getting people in a room.

Solution

Goods & Services pitched Liquidity Fest, a virtual festival built around IEX's own beer. Two new brews, Liquidity Lit and Liquidity Dark, stood in for the two ways to trade with D-Limit. A solar eclipse became the campaign's central metaphor: light and dark in perfect alignment. As Design Director, I led the motion design, designing the teaser and creating all of the 3D renders.

The strategy positioned D-Limit as the lit complement to IEX's dark trading, so every frame had to hold light and dark at once. Look development started from pure light: a glowing disc with a soft corona, multiplied and then resolved into a single sun. From there, the beer can became the moon. Seen head-on, its lid slides across the light to form the eclipse, and a single gold flare breaks through as the "lit." I lit the 3D cans almost entirely with rim light against black, so each form reads through light alone. That kept the system minimal and true to IEX's black, white, and gold.

The teaser and key visual anchored a wider motion system. Four scripted spots each closed on an animated can end card, from a sunrise matched to a rising pour to an overhead can whose shadow rotates until light and dark invert. For Liquidity Fest itself, the plan called for a looping waiting-room reel, speaker bumpers, and data animations that would present IEX's market numbers like a product reveal. The pitch was approved but never went to production. The teaser and renders remain the clearest expression of the idea.
